Earthquake of 2.8 magnitude off Newfoundland coast starts the new year

While New Year’s Day is often home to a couple of rumbles and bangs, a rattling felt throughout central Newfoundland on Wednesday was not caused by a firework. 

Earthquakes Canada says a small earthquake occurred at 2:11 p.m. NT, off the coast of the island in Notre Dame Bay, between Fortune Harbour and Moreton’s Harbour. 

Though people throughout central Newfoundland reported feeling the quake, it would appear there are no major impacts.

A spokesperson with Earthquakes Canada said “the magnitude was 2.8, large enough to be felt but too small to cause any damage.”

According to the earthquake monitoring group, the epicentre of the quake happened around 19 kilometres west of Twillingate, 33 kilometres northeast of Lewisporte or around 85 kilometres northeast of Gander.
