Donald Trump told Fox News his hush money trial has been much “tougher” on his family than him following his conviction on more than 30 felony counts.
The former president sat with Fox News anchors Rachel Campos-Duffy, Pete Hegseth, and Will Cain for an interview over the weekend and portions aired on Monday, including Trump discussing the impact of his trial on his wife and children.
“I think in many ways it’s tougher on them than it is on me,” he said.
Trump was on trial in Manhattan for falsifying business records. He was accused of concealing hush money payments to adult film actress Stormy Daniels to hide an affair from the public just before the 2016 presidential election. He continues to deny any wrongdoing as he faces sentencing on July 11.
Trump referred to “salacious names” involved in the trial when talking about his wife, Melania Trump, though he did not specify anyone.
“I have a wonderful wife who has to listen to this stuff all the time. They do that for this reason. They do that — all these salacious names that they put in of these people and I’m not even allowed to defend myself because of a gag order,” he said.
The former president has faced multiple fines for violating a gag order barring him from publicly attacking anyone involved in his trial. He said it’s been “very hard” for his wife as she “has to read all this crap.”
Asked how his youngest son, Barron Trump, is taking things, Trump offered only praise.
“The guy’s a very good student and he’s applied to colleges and he gets into everywhere he goes. He’s very sought after. From that standpoint, he’s a very smart guy,” he said. “He’s a very tall guy. He’s a great kid. He’s cool. He’s pretty cool.”
