ST. LOUIS — Someday the Dodgers’ starting rotation might be whole. But that day won’t be any time soon.
The Dodgers placed Tyler Glasnow back on the injured list on Friday, this time with elbow tendinitis. Left-hander Justin Wrobleski was added to the roster to start Friday night, but the move wasn’t announced until after the National Anthem had played.
“I think for us right now we’re in a holding pattern. … It’s going to be a last-minute decision,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said before the pre-game workout. “Right now we’ve got some guys that are in limbo that we’re trying to suss out.”
Pressed on Glasnow’s status for Saturday, Roberts said, “This is not a Tyler situation. It’s more of just all the pitching. … Our expectation is he’s starting tomorrow.”
Glasnow made four starts after spending two weeks on the IL at midseason with lower back tightness. He was 1-1 with a 3.60 ERA in those four starts, going seven innings twice. That pushed his innings total for this season to 134, well past his previous high (120 last season).
Glasnow’s turn in the rotation came up on Friday but Roberts had already said earlier in the week that Glasnow would not pitch before Saturday. The Dodgers have started Glasnow on ‘regular rest’ (four days off between starts) just once all season.
Right-hander Bobby Miller was scratched from his scheduled start with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Thursday and joined the Dodgers in St. Louis on Friday. He is expected to start in Glasnow’s place on Saturday.
Like 10 starting pitchers for the Dodgers, Miller spent time on the IL earlier this year (with a shoulder injury). He returned in mid-June but was demoted to Triple-A at the All-Star break with a 1-2 record and an 8.07 ERA in seven starts this season.
Miller made three starts for OKC after his demotion (and skipped another with adductor muscle injury). He allowed nine runs on 11 hits and 11 walks in 13 innings over those three starts.
YAMAMOTO PROGRESS
Right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto joined the Dodgers in St. Louis as well. He threw a live batting practice session Friday afternoon, facing hitters for the first time since he went on the Injured List in June with a strained rotator cuff.
Yamamoto was expected to throw two simulated innings. But he only faced five hitters and threw 17 pitches – the result of either a miscommunication or caution as the typical summer heat and humidity enveloped St. Louis.
“My goal is still getting back to where I was throwing in actual games. But I think it’s good being able to throw a live BP,” Yamamoto said through his interpreter.
“The feeling is good. As I increase the volume, the (pitch) counts I think I will feel more different things. I’m pretty sure there will be some adjustments I need to make.”
Yamamoto said he expects to throw two more live BP sessions increasing those pitch counts before there will be a discussion with the Dodgers’ coaches and medical staff about a minor-league injury-rehabilitation assignment.
2000 GAMES
Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman played in his 2,000th big-league game Friday. He is the 252nd player in major-league history to play in 2000 or more games, only the fourth active player (Joey Votto, Carlos Santana and Andrew McCutchen).
“As I get older, I seem to be hitting some round numbers here and there,” said Freeman who reached 2,000 career hits and 300 home runs last year. “I just think it’s more of, I kept myself healthy enough to be able to go out there and play every day. Obviously, it’s a testament to playing good enough to allow them to play you every day. So it is cool.”
SPRING TIME
The Dodgers announced their Cactus League schedule for 2025.
Once again the Dodgers will start their spring schedule early to prepare for a trip to Asia. They will open the season in Tokyo against the Chicago Cubs on March 18 and 19.
Those two teams will open the Cactus League schedule on Feb. 20 at Camelback Ranch and Feb. 21 at Sloan Park in Mesa. The Dodgers will play their last game in Arizona on March 11 at Camelback Ranch against the Cleveland Guardians.
The annual Freeway Series against the Angels will be March 23 at Dodger Stadium, March 24-25 at Angel Stadium.
