Doctor advises against discarding liquid on top of yoghurt as people vow to mix it in

Dr Karan Raj has taken to TikTok to share his knowledge about the liquid pool that forms on top of yoghurt, leaving many surprised and vowing to change their habits when consuming this noble dairy product.

Many of us tend to discard food that appears slightly off, even if it’s perfectly safe to eat, so when yoghurt develops a watery layer on top, it often ends up in the trash.

However, despite its unappealing appearance, there’s a valid reason for preserving it.

Addressing his 5.3 million TikTok followers, the expert from Sunderland University pointed out that the watery liquid found on top of yoghurt is a reservoir of vital nutrients and vitamins.

“Have you ever noticed a watery pool of liquid on top of your yoghurt?” he asked.

“Don’t be so quick to drain it off thinking your yoghurt has gone bad.

“This mysterious puddle is full of essential nutrients – protein, calcium, B12, even probiotics – as well as a bunch of other minerals.”

That liquid that many tend to discard before eating their yoghurt is actually called “whey”.

Dr. Raj went on to explain that this liquid, known as whey, forms during the coagulation process when milk thickens to produce cheese or yoghurt.

He said: “The longer you leave your yoghurt undisturbed, the more likely it is that whey will build up and rise to the top, and leave a watery film.”

Dr. Karan Raj’s video quickly gained traction on his TikTok account @dr.karanr, amassing over 170k views and 4,000 likes.

Viewers were astounded by the scientific explanation behind the phenomenon of the yoghurt puddle, prompting an outpouring of comments expressing their fascination.

One person typed: “Oh no!!! I’ve thrown sooo much away.”

Another jokingly commented: “No whey!! I didn’t know that!”

“I’ll mix it from now on,” said a third, while a fourth person echoed: “I ALWAYS poured it away but now I will stir.”
