The Madras High Court has ruled in favor of actor Dhanush in a copyright dispute involving actress Nayanthara and her Netflix documentary, Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairytale. The court dismissed Netflix India’s petition to reject Dhanush’s civil suit, which alleged unauthorized use of a three-second clip from the film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan, produced by Dhanush. The dispute also involved Nayanthara’s husband, Vignesh Shivan, and their production house, Rowdy Pictures Private Limited.
Dhanush wins copyright case against Nayanthara over Netflix documentary
The legal battle began in November 2024, when Dhanush filed a civil suit against Nayanthara and others for including the clip in the documentary without his permission. He also sent a legal notice demanding that the footage be removed within 24 hours and sought damages amounting to Rs. 10 crores.
Details of the Legal Dispute
According to Dhanush’s legal representative, the unauthorized use of the clip infringed on his copyright as the producer of Naanum Rowdy Dhaan. The actor also filed a petition urging the court to grant permission to sue Los Gatos Production Services India LLP, the Mumbai-based entity through which Netflix operates in India.
Nayanthara responded by sharing an open letter on Instagram, criticizing Dhanush’s legal action as excessive. She thanked producers like Shah Rukh Khan, Chiranjeevi, and Ram Charan, who had granted permissions for her documentary without delay, contrasting it with Dhanush’s demand.
