Eight months after he stymied the rival Rangers in Round 1 of the 2023 Stanley Cup playoffs, Devils goaltender Akira Schmid is getting sent down to the AHL. The news comes one day after fellow goalie prospect Nico Daws was recalled to New Jersey.
The 23-year-old Schmid has struggled since his dominant showing vs. New York, logging a 5-7-1 record, .893 save percentage and a 3.26 goals-against average in 2023-24. Of the 41 goalies with at least 15 games this season, Schmid’s minus-3.9 saves above expected rating ranks 31st.
