From the night of July 28, all six lanes will be shut down from UP Gate at the Delhi border to Kashi toll plaza near Meerut for at least five days.
Commuters heading to and from Delhi will face major disruptions at the end of this month.
The police have decided to close almost the entire Ghaziabad stretch of the Delhi-Meerut Expressway (DME) for the Kanwar Yatra.
From the night of July 28, all six lanes of the expressway from UP Gate at the Delhi border to Kashi toll plaza near the Meerut border will be closed for at least five days.
While the DME will be off-limits, the adjacent NH-9 lanes will stay open.
Police Commissioner Ajay Kumar Mishra mentioned that authorities are working on a detailed traffic diversion plan to manage this period.
Last year, a similar diversion caused traffic jams on NH-9. Most vehicles were rerouted via the Eastern Peripheral Expressway, DND Flyway, and Noida Expressway.
“Last year, we saw most of the dak kanwariyas on DME. So this year, we’ll let them use DME and divert other vehicles. We’ll share the diversion plan on social media and other channels to minimize inconvenience,” said Mishra, as quoted by TOI.
In Ghaziabad, pilgrims from neighboring UP districts and Delhi use three main routes to reach Haridwar. Those on foot mostly take Pipeline Road from Loni Border to Niwari. Dak kanwariyas, who sprint barefoot with relay runners following them in trucks or bikes, mainly use the DME. Many also travel via NH-34 using GT Road.
