A new Black Label series, The Boy Wonder, is putting Damien Wayne’s Robin front and center. The five-issue series comes from writer and artist Juni Ba. The DC series will explore the complicated relationship between Wayne, his father, and his heritage. After all, Damian may be a hero within Gotham but his lineage is tied up in the evil-doings of the League of Assassins. When Batman is suddenly out of the picture, will Damian uphold the morals his father has taught him? Or, will his family bloodline rear its ugly head at the worst possible time?
Damian Wayne The Boy Wonder
Damian Wayne’s Robin has always been an interesting iteration of the character. He was raised to be the heir to the League of Assassins. Not a surprise when his mother is Talia and his grandfather is Ra’s al Ghul. However, his father Bruce Wayne saved him from that life and began teaching him the ways of justice in Gotham. Of course, Wayne soon realized he was not the first nor only Robin under Batman’s wing. He follows in the footsteps of his “brothers” Nightwing, Red Hood, and Red Robin.
The Boy Wonder kicks off with Batman called out of Gotham. He leaves the city in the very capable hands of Robin, who wants to prove himself as the best Robin. With Gotham left vulnerable, a string of abductions begins haunting the streets. Plus, there is talk of a demon loose on the city. Damian is forced to fight alongside his “brothers” and discover what it truly means to be The Boy Wonder.
Animated Influences
Creator Juni Ba decided to craft the series in an episodic fashion. Ba did this because of his love for Batman: The Animated Series. Plus, the writer/artist feels that the character of Robin holds something inherently fun and superhero-ish that makes him perfect for this type of story. His childlike view of the world makes him the best candidate for an episodic adventure that any reader can pick up and relate to. Plus, Damian Wayne’s emotional background with Batman adds the perfect balance of fun and drama.
The Boy Wonder #1 is on sale 05/07.
