A couple sparked a mixed response when they got up at 1am to reserve sunbeds on holiday.
Aimee Millar and her partner Darragh, both 20, got up in the middle of the night after missing out on spots by the pool while on holiday.
Even when they got up at 6am to have breakfast, they noticed many of the loungers were already reserved. This meant they had to pay up to sunbathe elsewhere.
The pair, from Belfast in Northern Ireland, shared their experiences of visiting Albufeira in Portugal on TikTok – and admitted they’d decided to take drastic action.
Aimee said: “In the hotel we stayed at, if we didn’t get those certain sunbeds we would’ve had to pay €7.50 (£6) each for a bed. As much as it was crazy we didn’t mind doing it at 1am as we were staying up later anyways.”
She filmed the moment they got up in the middle of the night to carry out their plan, confessing: “I know it’s crazy but it’s the normal thing to do here.
She added: “I believe that putting the sunbeds down is fair in the morning, but at more like 9am or 10am. Everyone likes to be close to the pool and not have to pay or lie on the grass.
“I think leaving towels down when leaving the pool or late at night is crazy and a bit too far. I think it wouldn’t be very fair to an older couple or families with young kids who may be in bed earlier – they can’t go and do this as easy.”
Aimee and Darragh travelled to Albufeira from July 28 to August 10 – and their clip went viral when they posted it online.
Viewers were shocked by the footage and took to the comments section to share their responses. One travel fan commented: “I actually couldn’t do it, it’s ridiculous.”
Another said: “Hotels need to start doing allocated sunbeds because this is out of hand.” A third admitted: “I would come down leisurely and just throw the towels off in the morning, I don’t care.”
And a fourth said: “Just back from Turkey, hotel didn’t allow anyone to reserve sun loungers. This is madness.”
