Ashwin had weighed in on the ongoing debate about Hindi being a national or official language. During a speech at a graduation ceremony in Chennai, Ashwin made it clear that Hindi is an official language, not the national language.
“English students in the house..give me a yay. Tamil (students cheer loudly)…okay..Hindi (very little noise from the crowd).. I wanted to say Hindi is an official language and not the national language,” the former cricketer said.
The Indian Constitution designates Hindi as the official language of India, not the national language. The Constitution also commemorates September 14 as Hindi Diwas, celebrating Hindi’s status as the Union government’s official language.
