Combating human trafficking: press conference on Wednesday at 14.30 | News

The mandate for negotiations with the Council would expand the scope of the current directive to include forced marriage, illegal adoption and better support for victims.

Lead MEPs Malin Björk (The Left, Sweden) and Eugenia Rodríguez Palop (The Left, Spain) will answer journalists’ questions on the Parliament’s position on the proposed revision of the rules.

When: Wednesday 18 October, 14.30-15.00 CEST.

Where: Daphne Caruana Galizia press conference room (WEISS N -1/201), European Parliament in Strasbourg and via Interactio.

Interpretation will be available in English, French, German, Polish, Italian and Spanish.

You can watch the press conference here (live and video-on-demand).

Background

The draft report endorsed by the Civil Liberties and Women’s Rights committees would ensure that victims of trafficking in need of international protection receive appropriate support and would introduce penalties for companies convicted of trafficking.

Once Parliament’s position is adopted (either without objections from MEPs on Wednesday, or with a vote on Thursday if there are objections, based on Parliament’s rules), negotiations with the Council on the final form of the legislation will start in November.
