Cindy Sherman and Luxury Resale Site Resee Team Up for Charity Sale

MAKING SPACE: In addition to the outfits of the characters in her famous self-portraits, American artist Cindy Sherman is also a dab hand at finds for herself.

“I have always enjoyed shopping at thrift stores, flea markets and yard sales and like most people love a great bargain,” she said. “I also love shopping for designer clothing because I love how fashion (of any kind, really) can transform.”

Now the artist is teaming with Paris-based high-end resale platform Resee on a three-day sale to make space in her closet — and for young artists.

From Friday, a selection from her personal wardrobe will be sold on the site, with proceeds benefiting Free Arts NYC, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering underserved youth through art and mentorship that the artist regularly supports.

There will be some 98 pieces available from brands such as Balenciaga, Louis Vuitton, Rick Owens, Marc Jacobs, Miu Miu, Prada and The Row as well as contemporary labels and designers.

Up for grabs until Sunday at 10 p.m. CET are Helmut Lang black denim pants; an iridescent sweater from Prada’s fall 2011 collection; silver sneakers from Maison Margiela; Rick Owens harem pants; a Balenciaga waxed jumpsuit from Nicolas Ghesquière’s tenure as well as a pair of gold python and black leather Louis Vuitton “Pokerface” boots from the designer’s spring 2017 collection for Louis Vuitton.

All pieces from the sale will be accompanied by a provenance note.

The selection is “truly emblematic of her distinctive style — eclectic and original,” Resee cofounder Sabrina Marshall told WWD. “Unafraid of bold prints and vibrant colors, she blends high fashion with the thrill of thrift store finds.”

The partnership also slotted in with the idea of that “both fashion and art should be accessible to all,” Marshall continued.

A long-standing supporter of the platform, Sherman is part of a new wave of high-profile members who want to sell their collections publicly to encourage circularity in luxury fashion or raise awareness for causes they support, added cofounder Sofia Bernardin.

“Cindy embodies this modern approach to fashion and resale,” Bernardin said. “She has long championed shopping her own closet and confidently re-wearing highly photographed pieces—something that feels natural now but was pretty groundbreaking a decade ago — very few influential personalities were leading by example in this way at the time.”

In recent years, Resee has organized a number of sales curated by prominent fashion figures, including a sale of vintage Alaïa pieces, in partnership with the house and its creative director Pieter Mulier, and launched its men’s category with French stylist and designer Gauthier Borsarello, who serves as creative director for French contemporary menswear brand Fursac.

Meanwhile, the 10-year-old resale platform, which named ex-Vestiaire Collective executive Sébastien Fabre as chief executive officer in December 2023, is stepping up its efforts in the U.S.

Currently Resee’s largest market in terms of sales, the U.S. is “a vastly untapped opportunity for sourcing” that the company plans to address with a dedicated team expected to be fully operational in January, according to Bernardin.
