Calcutta High Court upholds order on Suvendu Adhikari

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court’s Chief Justice’s bench on Tuesday allowed Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari to visit Sandeshkhali, after the West Bengal government moved the division bench today against court’s Monday order which allowed the BJP leader and another MLA to go to Sandeshkhali.

“We will direct two of the writ petitioners shall be alone permitted to move around the area with no other supporters and abide by the conditions. They cannot hold rallies or make provocative statements,” Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam said during the hearing today.

After the order, Adhikari and BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh visited Sandeshkhali and met the locals there. Left leader Brinda Karat and another CPI-M leader were also allowed to visit the area after the HC order. “It is a victory of the Constitution. We are happy,” Adhikari said ahead of going to Sandeshkhali.

Adhikari was stopped twice from going to Sandeshkhali.

Despite the high court order to revoke Section 144 in the area, the state government continued the prohibitory orders at 12 spots in Sandeshkhali.

“Sandeshkhali is the epicentre of parivartan in 2024. Last nail on the coffin for Mamata Banerjee is Sandeshkhali. Just like the Nandigram police firing was the epicentre of change in 2011 when Mamata came to power, time for change has come,” Adhikari said.
