Cabinet of Sun Readers give their Budget verdict – from fury over defence spending to demanding a vaping ban

Jeremy Hunt may have delivered a Budget which cut taxes – but he didn’t please everyone.

The Sun’s own Cabinet of readers have given their verdict on the fiscal plans ahead of the general election later this year.

HEALTH SECRETARY

 Trainee GP Dr Bhasha Mukherjee, 28

TRAINEE GP Bhasha, 28, said: “It is not enough to just tax vaping. It should be banned, certainly for young people.

“Witnessing children as young as 11 and 12 addicted to vaping concerns me.”

TRANSPORT SECRETARY

 London cabbie Grant Davis, 60

TAXI driver Grant, 60, was delighted fuel duty on petrol and diesel was frozen.

But overall he said: “Saving £450 over a year won’t do much for me with two kids to feed. It won’t make me vote Tory.”

DEFENCE & FOREIGN SECRETARY

 Ex-Army captain Hugh Andree, 50

EX-Army captain Hugh, 55, said: “There was nothing for defence. Disgraceful.

The promise that military spending will rise to 2.5 per cent of GDP ‘as soon as economic conditions allow’ is a cop out.”

BUSINESS SECRETARY

 Plumber Manesh Vekaria, 37

PLUMBER Manesh, 37, said: “The threshold at which small businesses pay VAT has been frozen for seven years.

“The rise from £85,000 to £90,000 will help firms like mine but he could have made it a bit more.”

HOME SECRETARY

 Ex-detective Jonathan Taylor, 63

FORMER detective Jonathan, 63, would welcome AI tech and drones to help police.

But he added: “The idea these measures will free up time equivalent to 20,000 officers a year is nonsense.”

EDUCATION SECRETARY

 Ex-teacher Carrie Ann Booth, 42

EX-teacher and mum-of-one Carrie Ann, 42, wanted cash spent on public services.

She said: “It was a Budget for an election year. There wasn’t even a derisory nod to the state of our education system.”
