Recently released Mamelodi Sundowns star Bongani Zungu has been pictured in an Orlando Pirates jersey.
Zungu shocked the South African football fraternity when he announced through his social media that he would be leaving Sundowns.
Zungu rejoined Sundowns two seasons ago
His departure comes just two seasons after he had joined the club, after parting ways with French side Amiens SC. For at least two seasons before joining Sundowns, Zungu was heavily linked with their rivals Kaizer Chiefs. There had been reports of secret meetings between himself and Bobby Motaung, but in the end nothing materialised. Instead he went back to Masandawana where he endured a stop-start second stint.
When he announced his departure, Zungu had been a regular in the season run-in which raised eyebrows. He started the games against TS Galaxy, Cape Town City as well as the Nedbank Cup final against Orlando Pirates. That proved to be the last game for Zungu in Sundowns colours, however. For some local football fans, it will also be remembered as the occasion he was skinned by Relebohile Mofokeng. To make matters worse, it was the action directly ahead of the finish from the teenager, that gave Pirates a 2-1 come from behind win.
When Zungu rejoined Sundowns two-seasons ago he had to go through an extensive fitness regime before finally making his debut. The delay probably took its toll, as he was never a regular in the midfield, by the time he was deemed fully fit. When he did play, however, he was often used in a centre-back-midfield hybrid role. In the end, he never quite got going, which ultimately led to his exit.
Pirates man at heart?
Now in the midst of Zungu looking for his next club after Sundowns, an old picture of him surfaced. In this picture, he is wearing a Pirates jersey, standing next to someone who seems to be family or a friend. Both of them at the stadium looking like fans who had gone out to support their team.
This is, of course, before the fame for Zungu, which makes it even more powerful. This in the sense that it seems to reveal that his boyhood loyalties are with Pirates.
