Brits are just discovering ‘hidden’ function of condensed milk

Did you know that a simple can of condensed milk can transform into an entirely different treat?

One man was left utterly gobsmacked when he discovered, after “40 years”, the secret behind condensed milk – that it morphs into caramel, or dulce de leche when boiled in water.

The TikTok user known as @that40yearguy was initially incredulous, exclaiming “ain’t no way” before attempting the culinary trick.

Even after conducting his own research, he remained doubtful, scoffing at the revelation: “Apparently you make caramel out of sweetened condensed milk”, before proceeding to boil it.

He expressed his astonishment at the idea that boiling the can for three hours could result in caramel, still harbouring scepticism despite his findings.

Undeterred, the man unwrapped the can and placed it in simmering water, advising to “let it simmer” on low heat for “three or four hours”.

Returning to the scene three and a half hours later with anticipation, he declared: “Let’s see if we made caramel”. Upon opening the tin, he was startled as it “popped” and a bit burst forth.

Tentatively tasting the contents, he was instantly struck by the flavour, exclaiming “Oh my goodness”, and marvelling at how “so good” it was. He continued to sample, amazed, proclaiming: “Wow, that’s the best caramel I’ve ever had”.

The culinary whizz triumphantly removed the top of the tin and encouraged his viewers to take a gander, clearly impressed with his handiwork. He quipped that he would “put it on everything” now that he had mastered the recipe.

His followers were quick to suggest enhancements in the comments, one saying: “Pour in a pot on low medium heat and keep stirring. When it starts caramelising, put pecan halves in it. Spoon on parchment paper. DELISH.”

Another offered a word of caution, adding: “I’ve done this for years! I do it for 3 hours, always watching and making sure the can stays fully submerged under the water. It can blow up in your face if you ain’t careful.”

A third, meanwhile, chimed in with their favourite way to enjoy the treat, recommending: “I dip sliced apples in it.”
