Troops will face mortal danger as Top Brass scramble to find replacements.

The flaws were found in ceramic plates known as Enhanced Combat Body Armour, left.

The Army, Navy and RAF have at least 120,000 sets.

Every plate is being recalled for testing. So far, one in ten has failed.

Some troops can switch to Osprey and Virtus kit but Royal Marine Commandos and sailors at sea are banned from using those as the extra weight might drown them.

Armed Forces minister Luke Pollard said in a letter to military chiefs: “I will not accept a make do and mend approach to the safety or operational capability of our people. I know you will not either.”

Use of the plates was due to end in 2023 but those plans were delayed to save cash, with Labour blaming Tory cuts.

The MoD said: “As a precaution, ECBA use has been suspended in all but unavoidable circumstances.”
