Boston Police investigating high school fight that left student hospitalized

Police are investigating a physical altercation involving two students, one of whom was struck with an object and hospitalized, at a Boston high school Monday.

Richard Chang and Stephen Cirasuolo, heads of the Josiah Quincy Upper School, said in a letter to families that the students involved in the afternoon fight will face disciplinary action consistent with the Boston Public Schools code of conduct.

“A preliminary investigation points to the student potentially being struck with an unknown object, possibly an electronic device may have been involved in the altercation,” the letter said. “We want to reassure you that this is an isolated incident and will be addressed consistent with BPS policies.”

The letter further states that staff at the Chinatown school “immediately responded and worked to de-escalate the situation, and BPS Safety Services and Boston Police were called to provide assistance.”

One of the students was injured, and after being evaluated by the school nurse, was taken to an undisclosed hospital by a family member for additional care, the letter said.

City Councilor Ed Flynn, who represents the district, said it is time to re-focus on school safety.

“It’s long overdue to have a metal detector in every school and operational as well to provide a safe environment,” Flynn said.

School officials said an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
