BOOM! Studios has big plans for its 20th anniversary next year • AIPT

BOOM! Studios have been turning out some great comics over the years, from its original work (Once and Future, BRZRKR) to its work on licensed properties like Power Rangers. 2025 marks BOOM!’s 20th anniversary, and I arrived at a packed panel today where BOOM! staff including Editor-in-Chief Matt Gagnon and President of development Stephen Christy were in attendance.

The panel kicked off with an announcement that BOOM! would be launching a new program titled “20 for 20”, which aims to bring back classic titles from its library. And that’s not all – BOOM!’s also bringing in a veritable army of creators, including Cullen Bunn, Jeremy Haun, Greg Pak, and Mark Waid! Waid was the biggest surprise since he’s been racking up an incredible amount of titles at DC, but the panelists were quick to point out his history with BOOM!, including writing Irredeemable and serving as its EIC for a spell.

Next up: BOOM!’s library of licensed titles. The biggest question on everyone’s lips was what would happen after the main Mighty Morphin Power Rangers title wraps next week with Darkest Hour. Gagnon showed an image of a new Red Ranger by Dan Mora, hinting that more news will come in November. “We aren’t done with the Rangers,” he promised. David Petersen’s Mouse Guard will also be making a return as Petersen is teaming with a new artist for a new series. Rounding out the announcements were hints that more comics set in the world of Dune and The Expanse would be released.

BOOM! also plans to continue publishing original titles. It has a trio of new series coming from Gus Moreno and Jakub Rebelka, Jude Ellison Doyle, and Shobo and Shof Coker. James Tynion IV’s Something is Killing The Children will also continue to be published monthly.

Finally there were the film/TV side, as BOOM! has multiple adaptations in the works. Under its first look deal with Netflix, it plans to continue developing a live-action version of Keanu Reeves’ BRZRKR, and an animated version of Hex Vets (about two veterinarians who treat magical creatures; Gagnon described it as “Doc McStuffins meets Harry Potter.” Mattson Tomlin and Lee Bermejo’s A Vicious Circle, which is set to wrap this year, is currently in the works with Ryan Coogler (Black Panther, Creed) producing. Finally, Prime Video is set to release a TV version of Marguerite Bennett, Arash Amel, Antonio Fuso & Stefano Simone’s Butterfly, with Daniel Dae Kim starring as a spy on the run.

BOOM! Studios is looking to go big for its 20th anniversary. I’m looking forward to its future plans and titles, and eagerly awaiting more news about the future of Power Rangers.
