BMW driver says sorry for verbally abusing petrol attendant

The BMW driver caught on video verbally abusing a petrol attendant attempting to clamp his car’s wheel has issued a formal apology for his behaviour.

The incident took place at a Shell petrol station in Rondebosch in Cape Town.

Apologise in person

In addition, the car owner, identified as Renzo Torrente, offered to apologise in person to all those involved – if allowed to do so.

‘In light of recent events at Shell Rondebosch and the subsequent video which has gone “viral” on social media, I would like to formally apologise to all affected, including the owners, management and staff at Shell Rondebosch,’ Torrente said in a statement.

‘My actions were wrong and I do not deny this, I did make an attempt at an apology in person, but understandably so, I was not welcome at the time, that being said, I am still willing to apologise in person if the owners will allow me to do so,’ Torrente added.

Torrente also stated that he has also agreed to ‘repair any damages’ that were caused at the owner’s ‘earliest convenience’.

‘Deplorable outburst’

According to a Facebook post by the Killarney International Raceway, the privately owned BMW involved in the incident had recently been loaned to the BMW Car Club of Cape Town for use as a Safety Car in the BMW Car Club races at Killarney, and still bore the BMW Car Club signage on its doors at the time of the incident.

‘This motorist’s deplorable outburst does not reflect the values of either Killarney International Raceway or the BMW Car Club of Cape Town; there is no justification for such verbal abuse of a person who was, after all, just doing his job.

‘Nevertheless, with this apology from the driver concerned, we hope that this matter can now be laid to rest.’
