BJP’s Harpreet Kaur Babla elected Mayor of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation

BJP’s Harpreet Kaur Babla was on Thursday elected as new mayor of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation. The BJP won the election with 19 out of 35 votes. AAP’s Prem Lata was the second closest with 17 votes.

Babla won after three alleged cross votes

This time the seat, with a tenure of a year, was reserved for women. In the run-up to the polls, the Congress’ senior woman councillor Gurbax Rawat has switched loyalties and joined the BJP.

In the 35-member House, the INDI alliance of AAP and Congress has 19 councillors, including 13 votes of AAP and six of the Congress, while the BJP has 16 votes.

The alliance banked on one vote of ex-officio member and its MP Manish Tewari, taking its total votes to 20.
