Another Democratic member of Congress is expressing concern about President Joe Biden’s ability to defeat Donald Trump.
Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-WA) painted a grim picture for Democrats in November’s election after Biden’s awful debate performance on Thursday. The president struggled to articulate his thoughts and stumbled over his words. He even bizarrely stated, “We finally beat Medicare.”
Asked by a KATU reporter on Tuesday if Biden should step aside or remain in the race, Gluesenkamp Perez predicted the president will lose his reelection bid. Notably, she did not call for him to step aside:
GLUESENKAMP PEREZ: About 50 million Americans tuned in and watched that debate. I was one of them for about five very painful minutes. And we all saw what we saw. You can’t undo that. And you know, the truth I think is that Biden is going to lose to Trump. I know that’s difficult, but I think the damage has been done by that debate.
REPORTER: Should he step down now then, do you believe? Or stay in that race?
GLUESENKAMP PEREZ: Well, a core tenet of democracy is that you accept the results of an election. And the reality is primary voting has already happened to a degree, that Biden is the nominee
Earlier on Tuesday, Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-TX) became the first Democratic member of Congress to call on Biden to withdraw from the race.
“Recognizing that, unlike Trump, President Biden’s first commitment has always been to our country, not himself, I am hopeful that he will make the painful and difficult decision to withdraw,” he said in a statement. “I respectfully call on him to do so.”
Politico reported that Biden is quickly losing support from Democrats on Capitol Hill, though only Doggett has publicly called for the president to stand down.
