Best Rigs in The Outlast Trials 1.0, Ranked

In The Outlast Trials, players are pushed to their limits by undertaking a series of tasks while evading enemies. The game features four character classes, known as Rigs, which can be purchased from an NPC by the name of Cornelius Noakes inside the Sinyala Facility.

Noakes was abducted by the Murkoff Corporation and forced to provide technical maintenance. Luckily, players can utilize his array of upgrades to the benefit of their missions.

More About Rigs

There are four Rigs in The Outlast Trials: Heal, Stun, Blind, and X-Ray. Each of them fulfills a purpose in combat. Let’s briefly analyze each Rig to determine the advantages it provides to players.

Stun allows the player to equip a powerful throwing device that emits an electric shock to temporarily stun and disorient enemies.

Blind provides a landmine that, once triggered by the enemy, will emit a temporarily blinding explosion of smoke.

Heal pertains to an aerosol gas that replenishes a player’s health, along with the health of friends nearby.

X-Ray earns players the tactical enhancement to see through walls, revealing the locations of enemies and teammates.

Ranking Every Rig in The Outlast Trials

It is true that every Rig serves a valuable purpose, but some are still more useful than others in the heat of the moment. Although X-Ray is a helpful add-on to reveal enemies, the Heal Rig could quite literally save your life in a dire situation. Likewise, Blind or Stun could provide an escape route to evade danger.

Players are unable to fight back against enemies, but they can incapacitate them for short periods of time. When cooperating with a full team (four characters), it would be extremely advantageous for each player to assign themselves a role and stick to it, thereby maximizing the chances of escape for the whole squad.

With that said, let’s determine which Rigs are the best overall.

4. X-Ray

It’s a well-known fact that X-Ray is typically the weakest Rig of them all. This Rig allows players to see the location of enemies through walls and other obstacles and even tag them for teammates to see. This can come in handy to hatch a strategic game plan, but unless X-Ray is upgraded to the fullest, it sadly possesses little potential.

By upgrading X-Ray, players can unlock ‘Resources Intel’ and ‘Classified Intel’ to scout out helpful items around the map. This can be useful for teammates who are low on health or suffering from psychosis. ‘Battery Transfer’ can replenish the Night Vision Battery whenever the Rig is activated, making it easier to navigate dimly-lit areas. While it does offer some nifty abilities, the X-Ray Rig just isn’t as worthwhile as some other Rigs.

3. Blind

The Blind Rig, when activated, allows players to plant a mine that explodes into a cloud of smoke and temporarily blinds nearby enemies. Placing the mine in doorways is a tactical approach for getting the drop on enemies and predicting their path to evade them with ease. The ‘Recharge’ upgrade can reset the mine once it has been triggered, allowing for several uses. ‘Prepared’ allows players to activate their mine right from the beginning of the trial.

‘Deploy Technique’ shortens the time required to plant the mine, allowing for a faster execution. The Blind Rig and Stun Rig go hand-in-hand at times, since both of them slow enemies down, but the Blind Rig can be a last-ditch attempt at escape if the player doesn’t have enough time to throw a stun device. This isn’t always the most practical setup when entering a high-speed chase, however, as mines take considerably longer to set up by default.

2. Stun

The Stun Rig, unsurprisingly, allows players to stun enemies for a short period of time using an electrified device. Like the empty bottles and bricks scattered around the map, the device can be thrown directly at enemies. It can be useful against enemies who are hot on one’s tail, allowing a few seconds to reconfigure a strategy. This Rig is the closest players can get to fighting back against the enemies without engaging in physical combat, so it has a considerable amount of value.

The ‘Extended Duration’ Rig increases the time an enemy is stunned for. Like before, ‘Prepared’ allows the Stun Rig to be activated as soon as the trial starts. And finally, ‘Expanded Radius’ gives the device a larger hit box to stun enemies, possibly even multiple at once if need be. This Rig might be more suited to players who laugh in the face of danger and prefer a direct approach over a stealthy one.

1. Heal

The Heal Rig is an absolute necessity for any team in The Outlast Trials and it also happens to be the best Rig available. The Rig releases an aerosol gas that heals both the user and any teammates in the vicinity. It is crucial to survival that every team has at least one player running the Heal Rig, since replenishing health is a no-brainer to withstand the tests.

There is a major downside to the Healing Rig in that its radius isn’t very large at a base level, so players will need to be near teammates at all times when activating it. However, certain upgrades can fix that predicament. ‘Expanded Radius’ does exactly as it says on the tin, which is great for co-op players but solo players have no use for it. ‘Detox’ allows the Heal Rig to not only heal, but also cure Psychosis. Lastly, ‘Poison’ will effectively slow down any enemies who are caught in the gas.
