This expansion aims to cater to the rising demand for secure cycle parking, especially in high-ridership areas, helping commuters with safer, convenient, and greener last-mile connectivity options.
The Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT) is looking to expand bicycle docks at 10 additional Bengaluru Metro stations to boost last-mile connectivity, as reported by The Indian Express.
DULT, in collaboration with Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), had earlier launched a pilot project, setting up cycle stands and pedal ports at 10 Metro stations in Bengaluru to encourage sustainable transport.
The 10 new stations chosen for more cycle parking spots are Kengeri Bus Terminal, KR Puram, Madavara, Chikkabidarakallu, Manjunatha Nagara, Dasarahalli, National College, Banashankari, Jaya Prakash Nagar, and Silk Institute.
These stations will get new cycle modules, with some even getting covered cycle stands and upgraded areas for parking.
These stations were picked based on their high ridership, space availability, and the success of the pilot cycle stands. The initial project received positive feedback, showing strong interest in bicycle parking for last-mile transit.
In June 2024, DULT conducted an assessment at the pilot stations, including Nagasandra, Peenya, and Mahalakshmi Layout, to check how well the cycle parking was used.
According to Financial Express, stations like Yelachenahalli and Swami Vivekananda Road had weekday occupancy rates going over 100 percent, showing high demand. However, stations like Rajajinagar saw less use, likely due to better public transport connectivity nearby.
The findings highlight that high-ridership stations benefit the most from cycle parking, especially in paid, secure zones with surveillance, as these areas are preferred by commuters.
