Bengaluru commuters demand urgent access to the double-decker flyover at the congested Silk Board crossroads.
Bengaluru residents have urged the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) to open up the lower deck of the long-awaited double-decker flyover project and three ramps for the public.
The city’s residents have argued that now the project is already completed, there should not be a hold-up for the inauguration by a VIP, reported Times of India.
The flyover is set to offer a respite to commuters who have been battling long jams and delays at the notorious Silk Board junction in the city.
The three-kilometre road-rail flyover from Ragigudda to Silk Board, part of the Yellow Line Metro project, was originally scheduled to open in late 2023. However, with multiple delays, the project has missed the deferred deadlines of May 2024 and June 2024.
Authorities are reportedly waiting for a green signal from the central and state governments, both partners of BMRCL, before announcing an official opening date.
“The date of opening the road infrastructure will be communicated shortly,” a BMRCL official said, as quoted by the national daily.
The lower deck of the flyover has reportedly been ready for 1.5 years, but the ramps at the Silk Board connection were only recently built. Currently, the flyover is partially ready to handle traffic flow from Ragigudda and BTM Layout to HSR Layout and Hosur Road.
However, it may take another year to be ready to accommodate traffic flow in the opposite direction.
The path of the double-decker flyover includes the Jayadeva Hospital junction, which houses the city’s tallest Metro station set to have an interchanging facility for the upcoming Yellow and Pink lines of the Bengaluru metro.
The flyover is expected to make commuting easy between South Bengaluru and key IT hubs such as Whitefield and Electronics City, with direct access to locations such as HSR Layout and BTM Layout.
BMRCL made a substantial change to the elevated Metro corridor design in 2016-17 to include Bangalore’s first double-decker flyover, which cost Rs 449 crore for road infrastructure.
