Bengal assembly adjourned as BJP condoles murdered student; special session to focus on anti-rape legislation

In an unprecedented incident, after the assembly was adjourned on the first day of the Special Session, BJP Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari and all others BJP MLAs condoled the death of RGKAR Post Graduate student who was raped and murdered in the hospital premises on August 9.

Meanwhile, the assembly special session opens today for two days and anti-rape legislation to be tabled tomorrow. West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has announced a stringent anti-rape bill to be tabled in Bengal assembly. BJP has asked all its MLAs to be present mandatorily in the two day special session. Meanwhile, junior doctors to hold Lalbazar Police Headquarters today on 24th day after rape & murder of the junior doctor in RGKar.

The junior doctors have organized protests with Medical students from all across the state, demanding resignation of the Commissioner of Police Vineet Goyal. “Our only demand is the resignation of CP Vineet Goyal. We want to meet him and seek his resignation,” a protestor said.

“We will continue peaceful demonstrations until we get justice. We will sit unless the Commissioner of Police comes to meet us,” a protesting doctor said.

Meanwhile, after the special session was adjourned today and Speaker Biman Banerjee and all other Trinamool MLAs left the floor of the House, Opposition was waited after the adjournment and then condoled as the Speaker did not include the RG Kar deceased’s obituary. Adhikari and other MLAs said they are ready to get suspended but will fight the issue.

The Speaker said that the RG Kar rape and murder victim could not be named, hence there can be no obituary. Obituary and silence was observed for former Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya today during the opening of the session.“This is anti-women and torturous government must go. This is the final fight. If you want to suspend us for one-two months, you can do it. In the last three years, it has happened five times. You can stop our salary. We will not compromise with our sisters and daughters,” Adhikari said, when asked about the condolence after the adjournment.“Today a special session was called by the Chief Minister. As per practice of the assembly, Business & Rules of the Assembly, the Speaker will call the session or secretary will call the session. Here is West Bengal, there is only one post-the Chief Minister. On August 28, she declared that a special session will be convened next week. For that, Speaker called the Special Session,” Adhikari said.

“On the first day, there is a practice to read the condolence and observe silence for two minutes. After reading BA committee report, the Speaker started his speech for the obituary and condolence of former Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya was announced. BJP MLAs raised our voice on the floor of the House and urged him to include condolence of the victim of the RG Kar brutal rape & murder case on August 9,” Adhikari said. “So, we separately observed condolence for our departed soul of our sister. The government and assembly are so cruel, they are not ready to condole the victim. We pointed out that without naming her, condolence should be observed.”

The BJP MLAs and leaders, led by Adhikari observed the condolence inside the assembly after the House was adjourned and then brought out a candle-light silent march all across the assembly, wearing a black scarf.

“We pray for her departed soul of our sister and wish the rapists should be punished. We want the family to come out and participate in the legal fight for justice,” Adhikari added.

State Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Sobhondeb Chattopadhyay said, “I have never heard such an unrealistic proposition. There is some legal restrictions-the name of the raped person cannot be named in the condolence. So, the victim’s condolence cannot be observed. I can say this with my 33 years’ experience.”

SC dismisses Sayan Lahiri case
Student leader Sayan Leader dismissed the petition by the West Bengal government in the Supreme Court.

“There is good news. In the Sayan Lahiri case, the state government rushed to the Supreme Court and the apex court dismissed the state government’s prayer. They wanted to stop the student,” Adhikari said.
