Beed sarpanch murder case: Pressure on Maharashtra govt to take action

MUMBAI: Pressure is mounting on the Maharashtra government to take action over the death of the Massajog sarpanch, who was allegedly killed at the behest of a close aide of NCP minister Dhananjay Munde.

On Monday, citizens took out a protest march in Sindkhed Raja at Buldhana district demanding the arrest of Valmik Karad and the other accused who were allegedly involved in the murder of sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh.

Protest marches have already been held in Latur as well as in Beed demanding that the culprits be arrested.

The kidnapping and murder of Deshmukh has shocked Maharashtra as the latter had a clean reputation and was allegedly killed after he stopped the extortion attempt of a solar power company in Beed.

The killing has also resulted in caste fissures coming out in the open as Deshmukh belonged to the Maratha community and the alleged killers are from the Vanjari community that is the OBC community.


Sambhaji Raje, a descendant of Maratha Warrior king Shivaji, has sought a meeting with Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan to seek action in the case. Beed Lok Sabha MP from the NCPSP, Bajrang Sonwane has announced that he would go on a fast after January 2 if the culprits are not arrested then.It’s not just the Opposition that has been demanding quick action against the culprits, On Monday Union minister of state for social justice and empowerment, Ramdas Athawale met the family of Deshmukh and said, “I don’t feel it is right that it should take so long to arrest the culprits.”
