Bananas, the everyday fruit enjoyed across the nation, can become ripe and mushy in what seems like hours without the help of food storage hacks.
While many people claim the freezer to be the ultimate location for food longevity, it’s not the case when it comes to whole bananas.
The soft fruit rarely tastes the same defrosted, unlike its berry counterparts. Fortunately, Dole Food, one of the globe’s foremost fresh produce manufacturers, has a few clever tips for long-lasting bananas.
According to the experts, the common practice of storing bananason kitchen counters or fruit bowls might not be the optimum choice for their storage.
Dole Food company claimed that bananas should be kept chilled, away from direct sunlight and positioned at around 12C to avoid speeding up their ripening process due to excessive warmth.
In advice that may surprise many, the experts stated: “A darker room without direct sunlight is ideal. A warm kitchen is therefore not the best place for your bananas.”
Should your bananas already be nice and ripe, popping them into the refrigerator is a helpful strategy as they won’t imminently overripe in this cool environment.
No need to fret if the skin blackens, it doesn’t hinder the taste of the banana.
As far as food storage hacks go, however, oftentimes the best solution is to chop up the produce to keep it fresh.
In this case, sliced banana is much easier to store for longer without compromising on taste.
To keep them from browning quickly, simply douse them with a bit of citrus juice.
Lemon or pineapple juice will work well and add an extra punch of flavour when it comes to eating the perfectly yellow and flavoursome banana.
The Dole Food team claim adopting this trick will result in a “particularly delicious” fruit salad.
Another savvy method to preserve sliced bananas is to store them in an airtight container in the fridge.
