Auto-taxi strike: Widespread disruption expected in Delhi-NCR on August 22, 23; Check reason and other key details here

A day after Bharat Bandh was observed in India, auto unions will observe a strike in Delhi-NCR region to protest against growing impact of app-based cab services on August 22 and 23, according to Mirror Now.

“For years, we’ve been appealing to the government about the issues caused by companies like Ola and Uber, but our voices have gone unheard. These companies operate with impunity, and we believe there is a deeper nexus at play. Our livelihoods are being threatened, and it’s time the government took action. We’re going on strike to bring attention to the illegal activities associated with these app-based services, including smuggling and the trade of alcohol and drugs. On August 22 and 23, all auto and taxi services in Delhi NCR will be suspended,” reported TimesNow quoting Kishan Verma, President of the Delhi Auto Taxi Transport Congress Union.

Why are unions protesting?
Impacted by growing impact of app-based cab services like Ola and Uber, auto-taxis in Delhi-NCR have drastically cut into their earnings while also imposing hefty commissions on drivers.

Despite voicing their concerns for years, the unions claim that both central and state governments have failed to address the issue. The unions are now demanding immediate government intervention to protect the jobs and income of auto and taxi drivers.

Additionally, the unions are also expected to protest against smuggling and the trade of alcohol and drugs. Who all will be impacted due to the strike?
According to media reports, more than 15 major auto and taxi driver unions, including the Taxi Driver Army Union, Delhi Auto Tricycle Driver Union, and Rajdhani Tourist Driver Union, have joined forces for this strike. The protest is expected to pull nearly 400,000 vehicles, including autos and taxis, off the roads, causing widespread disruption across the region.
