Australian Olympian Cate Campbell undergoes last surgery after retiring from swimming

Australian Olympic swimming great Cate Campbell has entered retirement in rehab mode after undergoing one final operation.

The 32-year-old fell short of qualifying for Paris 2024 and later confirmed she would hang up the goggles with four gold medals to her name across four Olympics.

Campbell celebrated her retirement with family, friends and more in Brisbane earlier this month before going in for shoulder surgery on Monday.

“The last six months of my career really took a toll on my body,” Campbell wrote on Instagram.

“My mind was saying ‘yes’ but my body was saying ‘no’. Nevertheless, I am glad I saw things through to the end.

“I’m grateful to my medical team for getting me to the finish line and I’m thankful to have their support through this next stage of recovery.

“We had hoped that time off would allow my shoulder to settle down — and it was much better.

“But, as I want to lead an active healthy lifestyle full of ocean swimming, learning to surf and lifting kids, we thought it best to fix up the lingering problems now.

“For shoulders that have done over 20,000,000 strokes they’re in remarkably good condition. Looking forward to hopefully my last stint of injury rehab and getting back to throwing my hands in the air like I just don’t care soon.”

Only five days ago Campbell addressed the changing mindset around her body after two decades training as an elite athlete.

The champion swimmer previously described managing her fitness as “almost a full-time job” on top of her training, having needed a cortisone injection just weeks into her return to competition after the Tokyo Olympics.

This week she said she had already noticed muscle loss in giving up the gym for walking, hiking and more casual forms of exercise.

“I’m finding out what my body naturally looks like for the first time in my adult life,” Campbell wrote, adding the hashtag #bodypositive.

“I’m excited to meet her.”

Campbell’s reflections followed the final farewell to her past “surrounded by people who have all played a part in my 20-year swimming career”.

“You know once you’ve cut the cake that it’s official. I had my retirement party last night and it was amazing,” she wrote.

“From childhood squad mates to team managers to physios to biomechanists to friends and family.

“I cannot express how wonderful it was to have everyone together in the same room. It was humbling to see how many people have helped me achieve my dreams.

“Thank you everyone who came, I had a sore head but a full heart this morning.”
