Attacks on Sikhs in Canada a matter of concern: SGPC

New Delhi: The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the supreme governing body of gurdwaras, passed a resolution expressing concerns about attacks on and “insecurity” among Sikhs in Canada, while also urging that India and the North American nation work together to address this issue.

The resolution was passed during the first meeting of the newly elected general body of the SGPC, led by Harjinder Singh Dhami, in Amritsar at the Golden Temple, Sikhs’ holiest shrine.

The SGPC resolution expressed “serious concern over the targeting of Sikh personalities in Canada and the sense of insecurity expressed by Sikhs living there” and stated that “both India and Canada should cooperate with each other to address these issues and try to make Sikhs living there feel safe.”

Earlier, Dhami urged that instead of hurling accusations against each other, the two countries take a sincere and logical approach to resolving the matter.

Dhami further stated that deteriorating bilateral relations are affecting a vast number of Indians, particularly Punjabis.

Meanwhile, Dhami’s victory over Bibi Jagir Kaur on Monday provided a boost to the Shiromani Akali Dal. Kaur was backed by the Shiromani Akali Dal Sudhar Lehar, a dissident section of the SAD.SAD has received a battering in the last two Punjab assembly elections, winning 15 seats in 2017 and only three in 2022.Sukhbir Singh Badal, the party’s supremo, was recently deemed ‘Tankhaaiya’ guilty of religious wrongdoing by the Akal Takht, further damaging the Akali Dal and its hold on Sikhs. This triumph by the leading religious body of Sikhs provided a much-needed boost to the Akali Dal.
