The incident took place around 8 pm when unidentified gunmen opened fire upon a group of workers associated with Apco Infratech. The company is building a 6.5 km Z-Morh tunnel that will connect Gagangir area with the tourist resort of Sonamarg. This spot falls on the main highway connecting Kashmir Valley with Ladakh.
J&K Police said “a terror incident was reported in Gagangir of Ganderbal and the area has been cordoned off by security forces and investigation is going on”.
Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah in a post on X said: “Very sad news of a dastardly and cowardly attack… at Gagangir in Sonamarg region. These people were working on a key infrastructure project in the area… I strongly condemn this attack on unarmed innocent people and send my condolences to their loved ones.”
According to locals, gunshots pierced the darkness when some of them were returning to their homes after offering last prayers of the day at local mosques. “It seems the attackers barged inside the encampment of the construction company and targeted the workers near the mess area where they might have been going for dinner. Some locals have been injured in the incident as well,” said a local.
Last Friday, a non-local labourer Ashok Chauhan from Bihar was briefly kidnapped and later killed in Shopian district.
