Assassination attempt of SARS advocate in Mamkhize tax inquiry condemned

Edward Kieswetter says the attempted assassination of advocate Coreth Naudè who is acting on behalf the South African Revenue Services (SARS) in a tax inquiry involving Royal AM football club owner and businesswoman Shauwn ‘MaMkhize’ Mkhize is intended to intimidate officers of the court into abandoning the vital work they’re performing in furtherance of the country’s legal system.

Naudé was reportedly shot three times while arriving at her hotel near the Gateway Shopping Mall in Umhlanga, Durban.

Keiswetter condemned the attempted assassination, saying the shocking act undermines the authority of the State.

He said such acts and those who perpetrate them must be resisted and defeated by everyone working together to improve South Africa and ensure that none is above the law.

“SARS calls on our law enforcement agencies to act with speed in pursuing and arresting those who attempted to take the life of advocate Coreth Naudè. SARS wishes advocate Naudè a speedy recovery and wishes her family well. We will not be intimidated by such acts of crime and cowardice.”

According to IOL, Mkhize reportedly owes the tax man more than R37 million in back taxes.

SARS reportedly filed a court application to seize 13 high-end vehicles owned by Shandi Trust and Royal AM football club, entities in which she holds a majority stake.

LATEST INCIDENT NOT ISOLATED

Over the years, several South Africans probing corruption and other related matters, especially those that include high-profile individuals, have been brutally murdered.

Last week, a City of Johannesburg forensic investigator Zenzele Sithole who was reportedly on the verge of exposing corruption involving Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officials was killed in a hail of bullets while travelling home.

Who can forget 53-year-old Babita Deokaran, who was shot and killed on 23 August 2021 after she blew the whistle on alleged fraud and corruption at Tembisa Hospital?

Deokaran was shot multiple times in her upper body. She had just dropped her child at school before the shooting. Sadly, she died in hospital in the afternoon.
