Assam: One person killed in pre-poll violence

Guwahati: In an incident of pre-poll violence, a person was killed in Assam’s Samaguri.

The constituency which is going to by polls on November 13 has witnessed repeated clashes between BJP and Congress workers.

Police said that one Bipul Saikia, who was seriously injured during the clash between the BJP and Congress workers at a Bormar Bhogamur area of Samaguri constituency, died at his residence at Bajiagaon on Friday.

There were clashes between the supporters of two political parties in Bormar Bhogamur area on Thursday afternoon. Police said that there were allegations of a rally being obstructed by one another.

The Congress party announced the name of Tanzil Hussain, son of Lok Sabha MP Rakibul Hussain as candidate from Samaguri. Rakibul was a former minister, and he left the Samaguri seat after he was elected to Lok Sabha from Dhubri seat in the recent parliamentary polls. BJP has fielded Diplu Ranjan Sarma from this seat. Hussain has won the seat five times.


Police said, “Saikia was injured during the clash between the Congress and BJP workers on Thursday,” police said adding that investigation is on to ascertain how the deceased was injured that led to his death.Five assembly seats are going to polls in Assam, BJP will contest three and one seat will be contested by its allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL). Congress is contesting all the five seats.
