Arrival in Nairobi and a birthday bash!

Zimbabwean cyclists Thandolwenkosi Tshuma and Vusumuzi Mkandhla have much to celebrate as they complete their months-long cycling tour across Africa on an unforgettable note—arriving in Nairobi on 09 November, the very day of Thandolwenkosi’s birthday.

An Unforgettable Birthday for Zim Cyclist Thandolwenkosi

The couple, who began their epic journey in Soweto in April, have pedaled over 9300 kilometers through 11 countries, inspiring supporters across the continent with their resilience and passion. But their arrival in Nairobi marks a doubly special occasion, as Thandolwenkosi celebrated her birthday, surrounded by new friends and supporters who joined the couple for a lively celebration.

“Completing this journey was a dream come true, but arriving on my birthday makes it even more incredible,” an elated Thandolwenkosi told The South African. “This tour was about exploring Africa, but today, it feels like Africa has come together to celebrate with me, I have never celebrated my birthday like this.”

As the couple crossed the finish line, they were met with cheers and applause from a gathering of locals and fellow travelers, all eager to celebrate their achievements. Friends they made along the way sent messages, sharing the milestone with them from across borders. Nairobi residents and media practitioners joined in, bringing local treats and traditional birthday decorations to mark the occasion, turning a simple finish line into a full-blown party.

Vusumuzi, proud and emotional, shared his admiration for his partner. He said that Thando’s strength has been a constant source of inspiration for him. He’s been amazed by her ability to overcome challenges and is incredibly proud of her today.

“I’m thrilled to celebrate her birthday and this huge milestone together, right here on our pedals. The past seven months have been a whirlwind of sorrow, sadness, laughter, joy, and endless stories. Above all, I’ve watched her evolve to live the life of her dreams, breaking beyond the societal expectations placed on women.”

The couple’s cycling tour captured widespread attention not only for the distances they covered but also for the conversations they sparked.

Their choice to carry the South African flag, symbolizing their journey’s starting point, stirred debate across social media, with some questioning their decision. Yet, as Thandolwenkosi reflected on her birthday, she expressed gratitude for every moment, including the challenges.

“Today isn’t just my birthday—it’s a celebration of unity, love, and the incredible continent that made this journey so meaningful,” she said.

Journey: A Testament to Determination

The couple’s journey isn’t over yet. Thandolwenkosi and Vusumuzi plan to continue their travels, with the second leg of their African tour beginning in January. But for now, they’re pausing to enjoy this moment—a celebration of adventure, unity, and the milestones that make it all worthwhile.

In January, they plan to start the next season of their adventure.

Initially, they planned to begin in North Africa, exploring new terrain in Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, and beyond.

However, the couple has since canceled the northern route and decided to return along a different path.
