Apple users and AI aficionados alike have been anticipating the launch of Apple Intelligence for two reasons: it marks Apple’s first consumer foray into the artificial intelligence (AI) space, and it has the potential to set a new standard for fully integrated, AI-driven smartphone experiences. A new report shows the wait may soon be over.

On Sunday, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that Apple plans to release Apple Intelligence on October 28 with its iOS 18.1 operating system. The report attributes the wait to Apple ensuring that the rollout is as ready as possible, eliminating major bugs, and having proper support on its AI servers.
When Apple unveiled Apple Intelligence at its World Wide Developer Conference in June, it touted the idea of a personal intelligence system where nearly every aspect of your device has your personal context to create a new, smarter, seamless experience. However, the first version of Apple Intelligence won’t have all the features necessary to support the full experience.
18.1 is expected to include more simple elements like notification summaries. Gurman shares that the subsequent 18.2 update will add more AI, integrating ChatGPT and Genmoji. It won’t be until the release of iOS 18.4, which Gurman places in March, that Apple will unveil some of its most robust updates, such as the new and improved Siri, which will have the context of personal information and applications.

Apple Intelligence is only compatible with iPhones that at least have Apple’s A17 Pro chip, which includes the iPhone 15 Pro and later and Macs or iPads running on the M1 chip or later. If you are considering upgrading to access Apple Intelligence, you may want to hold off since it may be another five months before you can experience the bulk of it.
