The Indian wrestling community was struck with sadness when Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the women’s 50kg event at the Paris Olympics. She was found to be 100 grams over the weight limit during the morning weigh-in on Wednesday.
The Indian Olympic Association confirmed the disqualification, stating, “It is with regret that the Indian contingent shares news of the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the Women’s Wrestling 50kg class. Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a few grams over 50kg this morning.”

Earlier, Vinesh made history by becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to reach an Olympic final. She achieved this milestone after defeating Cuba’s Yusneylys Guzman 5-0 in the semifinals. Vinesh also made headlines by defeating Japan’s world No. 1 and four-time World Champion Yui Susaki, who had an unbeaten record in 95 international matches. Additionally, Vinesh is the first Indian woman to win gold at both the Commonwealth and Asian Games.
