The recent release of the Netflix series IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack has ignited a debate in India, with netizens accusing the show of whitewashing the events of the 1999 Kandahar hijacking. The series, directed by Anubhav Sinha, tells the harrowing tale of the Indian Airlines flight that was hijacked and taken to Afghanistan, sparking a diplomatic crisis.

While the show has garnered praise for its gripping narrative and performances, it has also faced backlash for its portrayal of the hijackers. This has led to calls for a boycott of the series and accusations of “whitewashing.”
Despite the controversy, director Anubhav Sinha has remained optimistic about the show’s reception. In a recent social media post, he expressed his gratitude for the love and support he has received from viewers. “I have received so much love in the last three days that I cannot describe it. I am indebted,” he wrote, accompanied by a photo of himself enjoying a plate of jalebis.
