Angry Young Men: Jai and Veeru in Sholay were originally army men; Karan Johar draws parallels with Gabbar Singh and Joker; also says “When you see Kareena Kapoor Khan in Jab We Met, that’s Basanti” : Bollywood News

The documentary Angry Young Men was released on Amazon Prime Video on August 20, and it educated the viewers about some fascinating trivia. It is about the glorious career of Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar, who were known as Salim-Javed and how they changed the course of Indian cinema. Their most accomplished work arguably was Sholay (1975) and a chunk of the documentary focuses on this unforgettable and legendary piece of cinema.

Angry Young Men: Jai and Veeru in Sholay were originally army men; Karan Johar draws parallels with Gabbar Singh and Joker; also says “When you see Kareena Kapoor Khan in Jab We Met, that’s Basanti”

Javed Akhtar began by saying, “Originally, the storyline came from Salim saab. The two main characters were recruits in the army. They were so useless that they were thrown out. And Thakur saab was a Major who later became a police officer. But I remember producer G P Sippy saab said not to show them as army men as it’ll mean certain limitations. He reasoned, ‘You can’t take too many liberties’ and so on.”

Salim Khan explained how he got the idea for the villain and his name Gabbar Singh saying, “My father was a high-ranking police officer. We heard stories of a dacoit named Gabbar Singh. He used to kill people and chop off their noses too.”

Gabbar in Sholay was a heinous, immoral man who cut off the hands of Thakur. Before doing so, he also assaults his family members. A memorable scene is when Gabbar aims his gun at a young kid from Thakur’s family. Instead of showing that the antagonist killed the child, the scene cuts to a train.

Aamir Khan mentioned this scene and said, “For us, at that time, it was like how people reacted to Tarantino later on, even though Sholay did not show much bloodshed. But its level of violence kind of took your breath away.”

Filmmaker Karan Johar remarked, “What they did with Gabbar is pretty much what you saw in Joker many, many decades later. When you see Kareena Kapoor Khan in Jab We Met (2007), that’s Basanti! When you see an intense action hero even today, that’s Bachchan. They created all those characters and Sholay is the mothership film where we are all still deriving and driving from.”
