The Kansas City Chiefs and Andy Reid are expected to begin negotiations this week on a new contract that could make Reid the highest-paid coach in football, league sources said.

Brett Veach, the Chiefs general manager, and Bob Lamonte, Reid’s agent, will meet while in Indianapolis for the NFL combine, league sources said.

Reid and the Chiefs are coming off their second straight Super Bowl win. He confirmed after this year’s Super Bowl that he’ll return next season as Kansas City chases a three-peat.

“I haven’t had time to think about it, but yeah,” Reid said after the 25-22 overtime victory against the San Francisco 49ers. “I’m mad at (Bill) Belichick and Pete (Carroll) because now I get asked all of those questions.”

Chiefs owner Clark Hunt echoed the same sentiment after the game, saying, “I expect Andy to be back next year.”

Reid has been an NFL head coach for 25 years — 14 with the Philadelphia Eagles and 11 with the Chiefs. He came to Kansas City in 2013 and led the team to their first championship under him in February 2020. Following that Super Bowl win, the Chiefs signed Reid to a six-year extension.

Chiefs keep the gang together

As they attempt to continue their supremacy in the NFL, the Chiefs are ensuring they keep their most prominent members — Reid, Veach and quarterback Patrick Mahomes — together for several more years. At age 65, Reid is the league’s oldest coach and a future Hall of Famer known for his offensive innovations who has led the Chiefs to a winning record every year since 2013.

GM is also expected to receive an extension

Similar to 2020, Veach is also expected to receive an extension alongside Reid. The pair have worked together for the past 17 years, first with the Eagles. Before a new deal is agreed upon and signed, Reid and Veach each have a deal through the 2025 season.

It’s possible, before training camp starts in July, that the new contract for Reid and Veach could be through at least the 2028 season. Mahomes’ contract — the longest in the league — runs through the 2031 season. — Taylor
