Amid reports of imported pulses stocks not reaching market, Centre asks state governments to increase vigil | India News

NEW DELHI: Centre on Wednesday directed state govts to step up vigilance on pulses stock, especially imported yellow peas, and enforce weekly stock disclosure on stock holding entities effective April 15 amid reports of some varieties of imported pulses not reaching the market.
At a meeting chaired by Union consumer affairs secretary, Nidhi Khare, importers also flagged India’s over dependence on Myanmar for tur and urad, and also suggested that it’s buyers and not the sellers who should dictate the price.India is the biggest buyer of pulses. Sources said they also flagged that Myanmar has set a different exchange rate for export purposes, which has jacked up the price of pulses imported from there.
In an official release, consumer affairs ministry said that Khare said pulses stocks in warehouses located in major ports and in industry hubs should be verified from time to time. “…strict action should be taken on stock holding entities found to be reporting false information on stock disclosure portal,” the statement added.
The secretary also told states and Union Territories that there is a need to step up vigilance over the stock position and price trends in respect to prevent hoarding and market manipulation. Apart from the five major pulses — tur, urad, chana, masur and moong — the state govts have been directed to monitor the stock position of imported yellow peas.
Govt has allowed the import of yellow peas from December 8, 2023, till June 30, 2024, to augment the overall availability of pulses and so far around 12 lakh tonne have been imported.
India is dependent on the import of pulses to meet domestic shortages. The production of tur and chana is likely to be marginally lower during the 2023-24 crop year (July- June), as per the agriculture ministry’s second advanced foodgrains estimate.
