The move, analysts say, assumes ‘significance’ more than three decades after a peaking Ram temple movement got pitted as a counter to implementation of the Mandal Commission report that stoked a caste narrative and led to emergence of political outfits like the SP and BSP. This is also being seen as significant amid the opposition bloc INDIA stepping up demand for caste census, in its desperate bid to corner BJP ahead of the Lok Sabha elections due next year.
VHP working president Alok Kumar told TOI that priests representing the Dalit and tribal communities will have a significant presence amongst the nearly 4,500 seers invited to the ceremony. This will include priests from New Delhi’s Valmiki temple from where PM Narendra Modi chose to launch the Swachh Bharat Mission on October 2, 2014, by sweeping its ground. Notably, the government has also proposed to name Ayodhya airport after Maharishi Valmiki.
Kumar said that the 15 priests, who would oversee the main ceremony, will come from diverse caste and community backgrounds. “These priests will represent the entire Hindu Samaj,” he said.
The VHP chief said the organisation plans to bring in at least one priest from every district of India. He said the Ram temple consecration needs to have the involvement of not only the entire Hindu community but also people from other religious places, including mutts and gurdwaras.
