American says one British treat would put US brands ‘out of business’

This British delight has been praised as so delicious that it could potentially put American rivals “out of business”.

If you’ve ever perused the foreign food section in your local supermarket or an American candy store, you may have noticed a plethora of sweet treats sold in the US that aren’t typically found here.

From unique Skittles and Oreo flavours to the irresistibly sweet Twinkie, there are many products that we would love to see on our shop shelves. It appears the sentiment is mutual across the Atlantic.

Many Americans have never savoured the taste of a refreshing Ribena, and there are numerous items in our confectionery aisles that they can’t find in theirs. However, according to one American man, there’s one item readily available in any UK corner shop or supermarket that he believes would be a hit if sold in the US.

Kalani Smith posted a video on TikTok where he sampled two classic offerings from the much-loved cake and baked goods brand Mr Kipling – the French Fancy and the Chocolate Slice.

While he found both treats scrumptious, one stood head and shoulders above the other as one of the tastiest things he’d ever had.

The man first tried the French Fancies, where he controversially opted for one of the chocolate-flavoured cakes – a move that Brits noted in the comments was unusual as these are often left untouched.

As he savoured the fluffy sponge, he remarked: “The chocolate one is good. I’m going to wait to rate them. I’ve got to at least take a bite out of each. The inside is so pillowy, and it’s a really good texture.”

After sampling all three flavours, Kalani decided that lemon was his top pick, with chocolate in second place, and strawberry coming in last. He then proceeded to taste the Chocolate Slice and was astounded by its deliciousness upon the first bite.

Kalani was so taken with the cake that he predicted it would be a smash hit in the US, even suggesting it could drive a similar product “out of business”.

Drawing parallels to American confectionery, he said: “In the US we have Swiss Rolls, which is the closest comparison I can give this. This isn’t nearly as sweet, which I enjoy.

“It’s not an amount of sugar that makes you feel sick, but it gives you a nice enough kick. With a glass of milk or tea, this would be excellent. I actually prefer this over a Swiss Roll.

“I think if they brought this to the US, this would put the Swiss Roll out of business. No question. That’s a 10 out of 10.”

Viewers of the video were primarily perplexed by his choice to eat a chocolate French Fancy first, yet some encouraged Kalani to delve into other Mr Kipling delights such as Angel Slices, Viennese Whirls, and Cherry Bakewells.
