Another streaming platform will have an exclusive game for the 2024 NFL postseason.
After Peacock streamed the wild-card round matchup between the Chiefs and Dolphins this season, Amazon will now get the chance for a postseason game next season, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday.
According to the outlet, Amazon passed on having the game this year, but per their deal to broadcast “Thursday Night Football” games, the platform was allowed to snag a playoff game for next year.
Peacock aired the wild-card weekend game in a deal worth about $110 million this year, which came with controversy and detractors — including from a New York congressman — because the game was not aired over the air in out-of-network markets in the U.S.
It was, however, shown on broadcast television in the local markets.
The game ended up as the most live-streamed live event in U.S. history, with an average of 23 million viewers tuning in during the Chiefs’ 26-7 win.
Antenna, a subscription research firm, said Peacock also gained 2.8 million subscribers in the three days before the playoff game.
“From NBC Sports and Peacock to the Comcast team, our entire company worked seamlessly to plan for this game and executed flawlessly to deliver a streaming experience with the NFL on a scale that’s never been done before,” Comcast Chairman & CEO Brian L. Roberts said in a press release after the game. “It’s a very proud moment.”
While there has been no announcement by the league or Amazon about the Prime Video playoff game, it would, in theory, allow legendary broadcaster Al Michaels to call another postseason NFL contest.
Michaels was originally supposed to be part of NBC’s playoff coverage this season, but was removed from those plans.
The play-by-play man is the lead voice for Prime Video’s Thursday night games, so he would be in line for this playoff contest.
