One of the most memorable conversations happened between Imtiaz Ali and A R Rahman. Both spoke about their bond and their process of working.

A R Rahman began by saying, “With certain people, you lose the title like director, composer, etc. You become friends, co-story tellers. Imtiaz is one of them besides Mani Ratnam, Rakeysh Omprakah Mehra and others.”

He continued, “Imtiaz never asks for a hit song and all that stuff. I just listen to the story and suggest, ‘Can we have this?’. He, too, has certain valuable suggestions. Sometimes, I give him something which is completely unsuitable! He still stores it in his kitty. At times, Irshad Kamil comes up with beautiful lyrics.”

A R Rahman then revealed, “In this case, the first question was, ‘Why me?’ because Chamkila ji has already composed the music. But what is our take on (him and his music) was our discussion. That’s how we were able to do all the songs.”

Talking about the period touch, the music maestro said, “Each period has a taboo and in this one, the more early it was, the more naughty the songs were! The same happened in Tamil as well. The 40s and 50s had certain lyrics which we can’t even use now!”

When asked what does Imtiaz Ali do when he disagrees with A R Rahman, he replied, “The first time that A R Rahman saab had sounded a piece of music to me, I was overwhelmed and relieved. Had I not liked it, I couldn’t say to A R Rahman that I didn’t like it.”

On a serious note, he said, “With Rahman sir, it’s always a discovery. It’s not about whether it’s working or not. I can’t even imagine where he takes me even in storytelling, forget about music.”

A R Rahman gave an instance of the song ‘Phir Se Ud Chala’ from Imtiaz Ali’s Rockstar (2011), “If I had given that tune to anybody else, they would have told me, ‘Its very complicated. Let’s not have this’. He, on the other hand, patiently sat, got the patience from Irshad and recorded it with Mohit Chauhan.”

He even said, “Not just Indians, even goras abroad vibe to it!”
