The View co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin pointed to Donald Trump’s appearance at a National Association of Black Journalists event on Wednesday as proof of her theory that he is mentally declining.
The hosts of The View hammered Trump over his q and a session in Chicago where he claimed Vice President Kamala Harris “turned Black,” earning quick condemnations from the White House and critics on both sides of the political aisle. Griffin argued that Trump’s contentious exchanges show that his age and stamina are a potentially major issue in the race.
Griffin praised journalists Rachel Scott and Kadia Goba — who were both on stage with Trump — for doing an “excellent” job holding the former president’s “feet to the fire.” The line of questioning, she added, showed Trump is not where he was when she worked with him in his administration.
“What I was struck by wasn’t just the blatant racism, the lack of understanding of what it means to be biracial — I’ve said this for awhile, he is slowing down. He’s never been a super eloquent person [but] he did not seem mentally sharp,” Griffin said.
“You were so good how you said that,” an excited Whoopi Goldberg said.
A topic of conversation on the show in recent months had been questions about President Joe Biden’s age and stamina, and even some View hosts called for him to step down before he actually did and endorsed Harris last month. Biden is 81, and Trump is 78.
“He walked into a room of Black journalists and it kind of seemed like he was blurting out loud what he says privately with his advisors,” Griffin said. “Like, he didn’t even try to hide or mask the racism and that to me is a sign of decline. He was asked should he take a mental acuity test. I think he should. He does not seem right.”
Trump said on Wednesday that someone should “look into” Harris’s race as he questioned how she can be Indian and Black. Her father is from Jamaica and her mother is from India.
“I didn’t know she was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn Black, and now she wants to be known as Black,” Trump said. “So I don’t know, is she Indian, or is she Black? I respect either one, but she obviously doesn’t, because she was Indian all the way, and then all of a sudden, she made a turn, she went — she became Black. Somebody should look into that.”
