Africa holiday spot with stunning beaches gets direct UK flights again | Africa | Travel

This part of Africa will become more accessible from the UK later this year as direct flights will now be available.

Travellers will be able to get to Sierra Leone on a direct flight for the first time since the pandemic, reports The Sun.

A new airline called Air Sierra Leone will operate three times weekly from London to the West African nation. Flights are expected to get off the ground on 2 December with more information about times and prices to be announced on 19 October.

Sierra Leone is known for its beautiful natural landscapes and warm temperatures which average 25C or higher all year round – it is located in West Africa between Guinea and Liberia, on the Atlantic coast.

In a post on X, Sierra Leone’s Minister of Transport and Aviation Fanday Turay described the new route as “representing a significant advancement for our country’s aviation industry”.

Flights will land in Freetown, the capital city of Sierra Leone – a new airport opened there last year.

Sierra Leone is often seen as a more dangerous place to visit but there are currently no travel restrictions listed by the UK Foreign Office.

If you plan to visit Sierra Leone, one of the most popular things to do is to visit Bureh Beach or River Number Two Beach.

One traveller on Tripadvisor who visited Bureh Beach said: “Located some two hours from Freetown, the whole feel of the Bureh Beach is relaxation.

“The sand is great. Most of the swimming area is sand. It is not a deep bay so you can go quite far out. The arc of the bay is picture perfect. Volleyball is an option. It is overall a good spot to recharge the batteries.”

There are also two popular national parks to visit: Outamba Kilimi National Park and Gola Rainforest National Park.

One visitor on Tripadvisor said: “We visited the Gola Forest South, entering the park at Sileti; it was a wonderful experience. We did three different treks: the first one, which was the longest, took us deep into the forest; the second one followed a road that runs through the middle of the park; and the third one was early in the morning in a different part of the forest where we could see more monkeys.

“We stayed at the lodge, which was a very simple and basic accommodation, but we had everything we needed, and our guides were extremely helpful in providing everything necessary. It is a park where you can come into full contact with nature and see the rainforest up close, enjoying the surrounding plants and animals. Not too expensive. Highly recommended!”
