India’s biggest flop film, made in Rs 250 crore, earned just Rs 70 crore, left producer in shock, the film is…, lead actor was…

Investing on a film takes a lot. From actors to technicians, everyone puts a lot of effort to make a film. However, when it doesn’t work out as expected, it leaves those associated with the project heartbroken. Here’s one such high-budget movie, which expected to be a hit, yet failed terribly, leaving producer in shock. We are talking about Ajay Devgn’s Maidaan that hit big screens in April this year.

Despite earning praise from critics, Maidaan failed to impress audience and bombed terribly at the box office. Made in Rs 250 crore, the sports drama managed to earn just Rs 70 crore. The film is based on the life of Syed Abdul Rahim, the architect of the golden period of Indian football which lasted from 1952 to 1962. The film was backed by Boney Kapoor and directed by Amit Ravindernath Sharma of Badhaai Ho Fame. Besides Ajay Devgn, the film also stars Priya Raj Mani, Chaitanya Sharma aka Rapper SlowCheeta and Gajraj Rao.

Boney Kapoor once revealed that he was ‘upset’ and ‘shocked’ when the film’s response didn’t come out as expected. The producer said that after Ajay Devgn-starrer failed at box office, he took few days to move on. Speaking to News 18, Kapoor said, “Maidaan was a shocker because before the film was released, everybody was very, very vociferous in praising the film. We had several screenings for the people of the film industry and everybody used to be absolutely amazed and stunned by the film. Of course, some of them felt that the first half was a little slow, but the second was absolutely extraordinary.”

He further added that till date filmmakers call him and praise Maidaan, “Some of the filmmakers also called me up, appreciated the film and they also wondered why the film didn’t do well. But I think it could be one of the iconic films like Mr. India in times to come,” he said. Boney Kapoor also said that he doesn’t know why the film didn’t work, although it took four years to make.
