Renowned tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain passed away on December 15, 2024, at a hospital in the United States after battling severe heart-related ailments for two weeks, his family confirmed on Monday. Zakir Hussain’s journey in international music had humble beginnings, he earned only Rs 5 for his debut overseas concert. Over the years, he rose to become a global icon, showcasing the tabla’s versatility and elevating its presence on the international stage. During his illustrious career, Zakir Hussain won five Grammy Awards and left an indelible mark on Indian cinema, contributing to the music of 12 films. Recognising his immense contributions, the Government of India honoured him with three of the nation’s highest civilian awards Padma Shri in 1988, Padma Bhushan in 2002, and
Padma Vibhushan in 2023.
Zakir Hussain amassed significant wealth through his stellar performances, with media reports estimating his net worth at approximately 1 million dollars (Rs 9 crores). Known for his exceptional artistry, he reportedly charged between Rs 5-10 lakh per concert. However, his musical journey had humble beginnings- earning just Rs 5 for his first performance.
Born to the legendary Ustad Allah Rakha, Zakir Hussain inherited his prodigious talent and passion for the tabla from his father. He further refined his skills under the guidance of Pandit Shiv Kumar, solidifying his reputation as one of the world’s greatest tabla maestros.
In addition to his musical pursuits, Zakir Hussain prioritised education, graduating from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, before embarking on a journey that would bring the tabla to global prominence.
Zakir married to Kathak dancer Antonia Minnecola, he was a family man and a father to two daughters, Anisa and Isabella. He also explored acting, starring in films like Saaz and Monkey Man.
