Rain to brings much-needed relief from heatwave this week in Gauteng

Rain is expected to affect parts of Gauteng starting Monday and continuing throughout the week, providing much-needed relief after a prolonged heatwave.

Since early December, many areas of the country have experienced consecutive heatwaves. However, this week, rain is forecasted as temperatures are expected to drop to the mid-20s in Gauteng and surrounding provinces.

The South African Weather Services noted that severe weather is anticipated, bringing thunderstorms that could result in heavy rain, hail, and strong winds, along with the possibility of localized flooding. In Pretoria, temperatures are expected to reach a high of 29°C, with a 60 percent chance of precipitation. In Johannesburg, there is also a 60 percent chance of thundershowers, with temperatures around 26°C.

Rain expected in Gauteng this week

The SA weather service warned of heavy downpours and strong winds in several provinces.

“Heavy downpours, hail, strong winds and lightning across the North West, Gauteng, Highveld of Mpumalanga and the eastern and central Free State, most of KwaZulu-Natal, and south-western Limpopo, leading to potential flooding, property damage and disruptions.”

Gauteng’s acting Premier Lebogang Maile said plans were made in case of rainy season. This comes after everal people were injured in Randfontein following a severe storm last month. With rain expected for much of the week in Gauteng, Maile said they were aware of the hazardous weather conditions

“There is a coordinated plan in place for unforeseen events that may occur during the season to ensure maximum and efficient utilisation of all resources to prevent injury, diseases and loss of life, and protect and preserve infrastructure,” he said as per Eyewitness News.
